Join us in the fight against modern slavery
For nearly 20 years, Be Slavery Free has been fighting to dismantle the systems that allow modern slavery to exist and thrive, driven by the belief that real change is only possible when we come together. Progress takes time, but the results are undeniable: through collaboration, persistence, and determination, we’ve made the world a safer, fairer place for countless individuals.
Be Slavery Free was born out of a vision: to build a world where no one is forced to live in slavery. We’ve worked alongside individuals, communities, organisations, and businesses, combining our strengths to create lasting systemic change. However, none of this would be possible without you – our supporters.
Through tireless advocacy, together we’ve influenced policies, shifted corporate practices, and empowered consumers to make informed choices that align with their values. Along the way, we’ve learned that change doesn’t happen overnight – but with persistence, dedication, and a shared vision, it does happen. As we celebrate our shared victories, we’re reminded of the incredible progress we’ve made together. Each win is a story of collaboration, persistence, and belief in the power of partnerships.
Together, we’ve achieved significant milestones
Together, we’ve achieved significant milestones
Each of these wins took years to achieve, and none would have been possible without the collective effort of people like you. They are proof that progress is not a sprint, but a marathon. It’s about showing up, day after day, with the belief that together, we can create a better world.
The Appointment of Australia’s Anti-Slavery Commissioner
This historic moment was years in the making! Since 2017, advocates, communities, and organisations like Be Slavery Free worked tirelessly to push for an independent commissioner who could hold industries accountable and drive systemic change. Finally, in 2024, Australia appointed its first-ever Anti-Slavery Commissioner. This role is a cornerstone of our fight against modern slavery, providing a dedicated advocate for fair practices and policies that protect those at risk of harm.
Seafood Labelling Laws in Australia
By 2025, diners across Australia will be empowered to make informed choices about the seafood they consume. This victory, achieved after years of advocacy, ensures that restaurants must disclose where their seafood comes from. By making supply chains more transparent, this law will reduce the risk of forced labour in the fishing industry and allow consumers to support ethical practices. It’s a reminder that systemic change takes time - but when it comes, it makes a difference for everyone.
General Mills Joins the Chocolate Scorecard
Be Slavery Free has been at the forefront of efforts to push chocolate companies toward better practices for people and the planet. Through campaigns, petitions, and behind-the-scenes advocacy, we’ve worked to ensure that the chocolate industry prioritises human rights. This year, our efforts bore fruit when General Mills - a major global food company - promised to join the upcoming 6th Edition of the Chocolate Scorecard. This milestone was made possible by nearly 5,000 supporters who signed a petition in collaboration with Freedom United, sending a powerful message that consumers demand transparency and fairness.
Addressing Child Labour in the Chocolate Industry
Child labour has long been a dark reality of the chocolate industry, but progress is being made. Thanks to sustained pressure from advocates and consumers, more companies are taking steps to remediate and remove child labour from their supply chains. This shift ensures that children have access to education and the safe, nurturing childhood they deserve. Each company that takes action represents another step toward a future where no child is forced to work in dangerous conditions.
Recognising Living Income as a Human Right
The cocoa farmers who make chocolate possible have been trapped in cycles of poverty for far too long. But change is on the horizon. This year, we’ve seen chocolate companies begin to acknowledge that a living income isn’t just a goal - it’s a fundamental human right. This recognition is the result of years of advocacy and consumer demand, and it represents a critical step toward building a fairer and more equitable industry.

We know that lasting change doesn’t come easy. It requires persistence, collaboration, and the courage to keep going when the road ahead feels long. But as we reflect on the milestones we’ve reached, we know it’s worth it. Together, we’re proving that modern slavery is not inevitable - it’s a problem we can solve when we stand united.
