Anti-Slavery Commissioner
Current Progress (as of 20 Sept 2024):
The Anti-Slavery Commissioner will soon be appointed
Few recommendations were taken from the submission, however we believe that these changes will be recommended by the commissioner themself after appointment and subsequently implemented
In 2023, a national Anti-Slavery Commissioner role was announced. This role is to lead Australian Government efforts in abolishing modern slavery in Australia and abroad.
We found that this new role had limitations to taking significant and meaningful action.
In response, we made a submission, signed by many supporting organisations. It had three key recommendations that the Anti-Slavery Commissioner (ASC) Bill be amended to provide the appointed with:
genuine independence (including joint parliamentary engagement)
powers to identify, monitor and enforce compliance
the resources to effectively undertake the proposed functions
Ensure the Commissioner is able to undertake their role ‘without fear or favour’ .
